Juuso Välimäki’s two-year contract with Brynäs IF, playing in the SHL, was announced on Wednesday, but just over a day later, the Carolina Hurricanes announced they had signed a contract extension with the Finnish defenseman who was stuck in the farm team last season.

The news of Välimäki’s quick departure sent the Swedish club’s boss into a rage.

– We are incredibly disappointed, Brynäs’ sports director Johan Alcén stated in a press release from the club.

– Our task is to build the strongest possible team, and this work continues at full speed, the club boss continued.

Just on Wednesday, the tone was different. At that time, Välimäki himself was also excited about the opportunity to represent Brynäs in the upcoming season.

– Brynäs is a legendary club, so I am really happy to be a part of it. The discussions with Johan Alcén have been very good, and he has made me feel both wanted and appreciated. Our team is incredible, and I look forward to the start of our journey towards the Swedish championship with Brynäs IF, Välimäki commented on the Swedish club’s website just a day before the announcement of his NHL contract.

Välimäki represented the Lions last year in the 4 Nations top tournament. In the recently concluded season, he led the farm team Chicago Wolves all the way to the AHL finals.
