Juuso Välimäki: new team
Defender Juuso Välimäki, who debuted in North America in the fall of 2015, is returning to Europe for the upcoming season. Välimäki has signed a two-year contract with Brynäs IF, which plays in the SHL.
Välimäki, 27, is moving to the Swedish top league from the Carolina Hurricanes organization, to which he was traded during last season from the Utah Mammoth.
Brynäs’ sports director Johan Alcén expects Välimäki to be one of the top defenders in the SHL.
– Juuso is a big and skilled defender who has all the ingredients to be a top player in the SHL. He has shown his potential at the highest level in the NHL, and his strong finish to this season in the AHL also confirms his high quality.
– Being selected for Finland’s four-nation team can be considered a very good achievement. Juuso is also a person who cares about his teammates and fits well into our identity, Alcén commented in the club’s press release.
The Calgary Flames’ first-round draft pick from the summer of 2017 has played 271 NHL games in his career, representing Calgary, the Arizona Coyotes, and their successor, Utah.
However, in the recently concluded season, he was completely without NHL responsibilities. Välimäki recorded impressive stats of 7+16=23 in 27 AHL regular season games. The defender’s season ended in defeat in the AHL finals. In 21 playoff games, Välimäki collected stats of 5+9=14.
