Jussi Ahokas to MTV: Big revelation regarding the NHL – “Definitely the next step”
Jussi Ahokas, who led the Kitchener Rangers to the championship in Canada’s junior leagues last season, has been linked to several NHL teams during the spring.
The Finnish coach was believed to be taking the next step into the world’s toughest hockey league this summer. However, as July approaches, Ahokas’s future remains uncertain.
Ahokas, 45, admits in an interview with MTV Urheilu that the most likely next step is not in the NHL but in the AHL, the farm league.
– Surely the next step is to the AHL side. From there, we will move forward again, Ahokas states.
– In a month or a month and a half, I will be much smarter about where I will be coaching. There is no rush. I still have a year left on my contract with Kitchener, Ahokas continues.
Ahokas, who has coached for two seasons in North America, openly admits that the path to coaching staff positions in NHL teams is still exceptionally rocky for European coaches.
– You need to have good relationships and know the head coach, so there is some prior connection. Head coaches want the right types of people in their teams whom they can trust, Ahokas explains the insular coaching culture of the NHL.
