Jonathan Quick's next move has been confirmed – the NHL legend returns immediately

New York Rangers is making changes to its player development organization and bringing in two former players. The Athletic reports that Jonathan Quick and Derick Brassard are moving into new roles within the organization.

According to the paper, Quick will start as the director of goaltending development. Brassard, on the other hand, joins the team as an assistant in player development. Both will work under the new director of player development, Tanner Glass.

Quick ended his playing career after the 2025–26 season. The 40-year-old goaltender concluded his NHL career as the American goaltender with the most wins in history. He accumulated a total of 410 victories and won three Stanley Cup championships. With the Rangers, Quick played his last three seasons as the backup to Igor Shesterkin.

Brassard represented the Rangers for four seasons as the team’s second-line center. In the 2013–14 playoffs, he recorded 12 points in 23 games and helped the team reach the Stanley Cup finals. In the summer of 2016, his Rangers career ended with a trade that sent Brassard to the Ottawa Senators, and the Rangers received Mika Zibanejad in return.

The recruitment of Quick and Brassard is part of a broader overhaul of the Rangers’ player development. The team appointed Glass to lead the department in the spring after long-time director Jed Ortmeyer left his position.

The Rangers’ player development has been criticized in recent years for failing to develop several promising young players into permanent NHL players.

Brassard will work in the player development group alongside former defenseman Marc Staal. The European player development will be overseen by Finnish Antti Miettinen. Quick, on the other hand, will take on a new role that was established following the retirement of Benoit Allaire, who was responsible for goaltending coaching.
