The Buffalo Sabres have strengthened their defense with a new acquisition due to injury concerns. The team’s Finnish GM Jarmo Kekäläinen confirmed the addition of experienced Matt Grzelcyk, 32, to the team’s blue line on Friday.

The one-year contract is worth $850,000.

Grzelcyk played 69 regular season games last season with the Chicago Blackhawks, recording 0+12=12 points.

The experienced puck-moving defenseman has played 596 regular season games in the NHL. The American has represented the Boston Bruins, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Blackhawks during his career.

The reason behind Kekäläinen’s latest acquisition is the injuries in the Sabres’ defense. Mattias Samuelsson will be sidelined for several weeks. Meanwhile, Olen Zellweger, who was acquired for this season, is currently in concussion protocol.
