Washington Capitals forward talent Ryan Leonard, 20, will be sidelined for an extended period in the NHL.

Leonard was targeted by a brutal hit from Anaheim Ducks defenseman Jacob Trouba during the last game. Leonard was unable to continue after the hit. Trouba escaped the situation without a penalty.

Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery confirmed to The Washington Post that Leonard will see a doctor later on Sunday. The forward is expected to be out for a longer period.

Leonard has been one of the hottest players in the NHL in recent weeks. He recorded an impressive 2+2 in the game before his injury. In the previous seven games, the American has tallied 2+6=8.
