IS: Ville Heinola wants out of Winnipeg: “I’m stuck here”
Finnish defender Ville Heinola began his NHL journey with a bang when the Winnipeg Jets selected him as the 20th pick in the 2019 draft. His NHL games started off wonderfully. In his first season, Heinola recorded 5 points (1+4) in 8 games.
Over the years, however, the opportunities Heinola received in the NHL have been limited. Games came occasionally, and ice time was scarce.
Ilta-Sanomat interviewed Heinola, who spoke candidly about his situation.
– What frustrates me the most is that I don’t think I’ve ever received a real opportunity in the NHL since my first year, Heinola says.
– And since that opportunity hasn’t come here, why hasn’t the team been able to let me go somewhere else where I might have gotten a chance?
According to Heinola, there has been interest in him on the trade market, but no deals have materialized.
– But it feels like the negotiations always stall here on our end. I don’t know why. It’s really frustrating, Heinola says.
– It feels like I’m stuck here.
This season, Heinola has played 38 games with AHL team Manitoba Moose, recording 18 points (2+16). Next summer, Heinola will become a free agent.
