IS: Now the agent of the shelved Finnish prospect speaks – player and NHL team in a deadlock
Finnish defense prospect Emil Pieniniemi, 20, has been shelved by the Pittsburgh Penguins. He was sent from AHL team Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to ECHL’s Wheeling Nailers, but Pieniniemi did not join the team, as he was reported to have traveled to Finland.
Pieniniemi’s agent Antero Niittymäki confirms to Ilta-Sanomat that Pieniniemi has arrived in Finland.
– The team wants to send Eemil to the ECHL, but we see that the Finnish league would be better for his development, Niittymäki says to IS.
– We have suggested that Pieniniemi be placed to develop in the league, but they have not agreed to do so, he continues.
Thus, the team and the player are at an impasse.
– Discussions are ongoing, Niittymäki reports.
Pieniniemi was the Penguins’ 3rd round pick (#91) in the summer of 2023. His NHL contract runs until 2028. Last season, Pieniniemi played 60 regular season games in the OHL with the Kingston Frontenacs, recording 10+50=60 points and 11 playoff games with 4+6=10 points.
Pieniniemi represented the Young Lions in the last two junior World Championships and won silver at the turn of last year. Before his OHL season, Pieniniemi played in the Liiga with Kärpät.
