Aleksander Barkov was seen in action on Thursday after a long time, as the forward served as the Lions’ top center in the match against Switzerland.

Some viewers noticed the Finnish star’s jersey, as Barkov wore number 16, which has been retired in the national team.

Previously, Ville Peltonen played for the Lions wearing number 16. Peltonen scored a hat trick in the 1995 World Championship final, where Finland defeated Sweden.

Barkov stated that he had contacted Peltonen to ask if he could wear the number, which is important to both of them, according to Ilta-Sanomat.

– Of course, I knew that if you want to use another player’s number, you have to ask for permission. Ville has worn number 16 in the national team. He is a legendary Finnish player.

– It is a great honor for me to have received his permission to wear this number, Barkov praised according to IS.

There was also a small sticker on the front of Barkov’s jersey that read “16 Peltonen.”
