The Swedish national ice hockey team heads into the crucial Slovakia match from a difficult situation in the ice hockey World Championships. The team’s continuation in the tournament practically depends on them managing to secure a full point haul in regular time.

One of Sweden’s disappointments has been NHL forward Oskar Sundqvist, whose contribution has been less than expected. After six matches, his stats show zero points (0+0), and his plus/minus rating is negative (-2). The St. Louis Blues forward was expected to provide leadership and strong two-way play, but so far his impact has been minimal.

Swedish newspaper Expressen expert Adam Johansson suggests a tough decision before Tuesday’s match.

– It’s time to drop Oskar Sundqvist from the lineup before the Slovakia match. He has entered this tournament in completely the wrong way, and in several games, he has looked like he doesn’t really know where he should be on the ice. The large rink has highlighted his difficulties, and his play currently lacks a clear impact both with and without the puck.

However, Johansson does not see the problem limited to just one player, but raises the issue of the entire center line’s inefficiency.

– The problem is not just one player, but the entire center line. Sweden’s centers have produced too few goals and scoring chances in this tournament. For example, Emil Heineman has been practically invisible – he moves a lot, seeks out hits, but his impact on the offensive play has been very minimal.

Regarding lineup changes, young prospect Anton Frondell is also in the spotlight, whose role could be increased if he is fit to play. Expressen’s other expert Sanny Lindström sees the young player’s potential as an opportunity.

– If Frondell is available, he should be elevated in the lineup. It’s primarily about attitude and being ready to do more for the win rather than just constantly rotating the lines.
