IL: The new commentator for the Lions is clear – this man will replace Antero Mertaranta
The commentator for the Lions’ World Championship games will change this spring, as the legendary Antero Mertaranta steps aside from his position.
The successor to Mertaranta, who has been commenting on Finland’s matches in the World Championships continuously since 1995, is now known. According to Iltalehti, the matches of the Lions will be commented on MTV by Jani Alkio, who is known as the long-time main commentator for the channel’s Liiga broadcasts.
According to Iltalehti, the position was also offered to Oskari Saari, who has become familiar as the voice of the Lions’ matches on TV5. Saari comments on EHT matches of the Lions and the under-20 World Championships, among others, at Warner Bros. Discovery.
The Lions’ World Championship games will be seen this spring through two different media companies. Viaplay will broadcast all matches of the tournament played in Switzerland live. The channel’s main commentator will continue to be Antti Mäkinen.
The Lions’ matches, semifinals, and final will also be shown on the free-to-air channel MTV3 and on the Katsomo service.
The Ice Hockey World Championships will be held in Switzerland from May 15 to 31.
