IL: The league is about to shake – this proposal is going through!
Significant decisions regarding the future of the Finnish Ice Hockey League will be made this month. Liiga oy will hold a shareholders’ meeting on November 27, where a new league system will be decided.
Iltalehti reports that the chairpersons of the league clubs held a meeting on Thursday, where they discussed, among other things, the upcoming league model.
During the meeting, various options were reviewed. The chairman of the league Jyrki Seppä revealed to Iltalehti that the most popular model was one where 12 teams would play in the A-league and 10 teams in the B-league. A 14+10 model has also been proposed earlier.
– We were able to discuss many different issues and got enough opinions clarified. I can reveal that of course, we discussed matters related to the league format. Regarding the number of teams, I can interpret that the narrower league model of 12 and 10 seems to be gaining more support, Seppä tells IL.
The majority’s stance on the qualifications was also clear.
– Similarly, when talking about movement between leagues, direct promotions and relegations are gaining more support, Seppä revealed.
Earlier on Thursday, the players’ association SJRY announced its opposition to the 14+10 model. According to the players, a more functional model would be 12+10. The Series Clubs Association representing Mestistä also supported this model.
