The coaching position of Toni Lydman, who had a long career in the NHL, at HIFK ends after one season, reports Iltalehti citing several sources.

The 48-year-old Lydman joined the coaching staff of the Helsinki club last season, assisting head coach Olli Jokinen. Although the collaboration went smoothly without any public issues, he is not expected to continue in the role next season.

Before moving to HIFK, Lydman worked in Jokinen’s coaching staff in Mikkeli with Jukurit for two seasons.

During his playing career, Lydman is particularly remembered for his time in the NHL, where he played a total of 847 regular season games with the Calgary Flames, Buffalo Sabres, and Anaheim Ducks. In Finland, he emerged in the late 1990s wearing the Tappara jersey.

Next season, Mika Hyvärinen and goaltending coach Riku Helenius will continue in HIFK’s coaching staff. The club is still looking for one more new assistant coach to complete the team.

Last season was difficult for HIFK: the team, plagued by numerous injuries, finished 11th in the regular season and was eliminated from the playoffs in the first round by KalPa.
