IL: Major change to NHL’s TV rights – this is how the matches will be broadcast in Finland
The broadcasting of the NHL in Finland is being revamped, reports Iltalehti. The NHL has sold the TV rights in Finland so that at least three different operators will show the games in the future.
The streaming service Viaplay will show about 900 regular season games this coming season, Disney/ESPN will present about 160 games, and MTV will air just over 30 games. The new TV contracts are for five years and cover the years 2026-2031.
In the NHL regular season, a total of 1,344 games will be played. The number of games shown by Viaplay, Disney, and MTV is only about 1,100, so there are still games available for sale.
– According to the understanding, the NHL does not want a fourth party to share the rights in Finland anymore. The remaining games are presumably still being sold to those three parties. Disney has acquired other sports rights with us, says an experienced TV industry operator to Iltalehti.
One option is also that the NHL shows the remaining games on its own service.
According to information received by IL, the NHL will be shown for free on, among others, the MTV Sub channel.
In previous years, Viaplay has shown all NHL games.
