Teemu Selänne does not consider it the best solution to raise his Joker jersey to the ceiling of the Veikkaus arena.

Among Joker fans, the topic has been discussed for a long time, but in Selänne’s opinion, the honor would be unfair to those club legends who played for the Jokers significantly longer and achieved several Finnish championships.

– Of course, I know how important a role I have had in the Jokers’ journey and what the Jokers have given me. At the same time, one could consider Mika Strömberg, who played for the Jokers for 14 seasons and won four championships. Or Keijo Säilynoja, 11 years and three championships. And they don’t have their jerseys in the ceiling.

– Does it take a bit of the foundation away if I were to go ahead of them? That sounds unfair, Selänne says directly to Iltalehti.

Selänne states that he prefers a model used by the Winnipeg Jets in the NHL. The club honors its significant players not only by retiring jerseys but also with a hall of fame.

According to Selänne, such an honor would be more pleasing to him than the official retirement of his number.

The Jokers have already removed Selänne’s famous number 8 from use, although the number has not been officially retired.

Selänne joined the Joker’s representative team in the 1987–88 season when the club was still playing in the first division. He played two full seasons in the Jokers’ league team before moving to the Winnipeg Jets organization.
