Hurja rumor: This team tried to acquire Kirill Kaprizov just before the season started.
The Minnesota Wild dropped the biggest contract bomb of the early season in the NHL right at the end of September, securing their superstar Kirill Kaprizov with the largest contract in the league’s history.
Kaprizov will earn 17 million dollars per season from his eight-year mega contract that comes into effect next season. The contract negotiations stretched all the way to the brink of the new season, with the Russian reportedly rejecting an offer that included an annual salary of over 16 million dollars.
Insider reporter Pierre LeBrun has now made a shocking revelation about events from just under a month ago on the TSN Insider Trading program. According to LeBrun, the Carolina Hurricanes tried to acquire Kaprizov immediately after he rejected the Wild’s previous contract offer. Ultimately, however, Kaprizov’s mind was turned towards continuing with the Wild.
Acquiring Kaprizov would have been quite a flex for the Hurricanes in front of other NHL teams. Especially the top center Sebastian Aho has demanded reinforcements from the team management for several summers.
The Hurricanes responded to Aho’s and the fans’ wishes by bringing in Nikolaj Ehlers, one of the hottest names in the NHL’s free agency market this summer, as well as star defenseman K’Andre Miller from the New York Rangers.
