Here is the Lions’ surprising championship song: “Something Similar to Den Glider In”
The Lions arrived on Monday in front of the media at the Olympic Stadium in a dark bus, from which surprising music could be heard. Head coach Antti Pennanen revealed that this is the unofficial championship song of the Finnish team.
– The Swiss goal song has been played. It has been the biggest target for playing since yesterday’s game. It has something in common with Den Glider In, Pennanen says.
Den Glider In became the anthem of the 1995 championship. The Swedes were so confident in their championship that the victory song had been composed well in advance. When Finland unexpectedly took the championship, the Finns mockingly appropriated Den Glider In for their own use.
Pennanen does not know exactly where the idea to listen to the Swiss goal song came from.
– One of the players came up with it. It has been playing there since yesterday.
Pennanen shared what his own feelings are like after the world championship.
– Winning is fun. That is the main feeling. I am really grateful and happy that we played wonderfully for the last two weeks. There were very few challenges or problems, Pennanen says.
What has been the coach’s favorite moment since the championship was decided?
– There have been many great moments. It is wonderful to meet the players in the morning, and when you come here to Finland and see how the Finnish people welcome us. Of course, all of us have surely received messages from friends and loved ones, so that also feels good, Pennanen shares.
The World Cup and the championship euphoria are quite a circus. Pennanen has clear ideas in mind about how he plans to relax.
– Out in nature with the dog. If you can find some cold water somewhere, then you have to get there, Pennanen says.
And how relieving does it feel to think that tomorrow you won’t have to walk in front of the media anymore?
– What’s wrong with walking with you, Pennanen laughs.
