The battle between the Lions and Austria has started peacefully. With five minutes left in the first period, the score is tied at 0-0.
In the latter half of the first period, a nasty referee error was witnessed. The Lions’ Olli Määttä struck Austria’s Tim Harnisch in the head with a high stick in the neutral zone. The infraction went completely unnoticed by the officiating crew.
Harnisch’s lip was split from the force of the hit, and blood had to be cleared from the ice. Thus, Määttä should have been penalized 2+2 minutes for high sticking.
The loud Austrian crowd rewarded the officiating crew with a deafening booing concert.
