HIFK’s sports director Janne Laukkanen has opened up about head coach Olli Jokinen‘s reaction to his dismissal on Wednesday.

Laukkanen states that Jokinen took the news of his premature termination hard.

– He was of course very disappointed. He had the opportunity to get the team back on track, but the results didn’t come. A quick decision had to be made, Laukkanen tells Iltalehti.

HIFK’s start to the season has been painful. The Helsinki club is sitting in 15th place in the league standings, and the team’s performance has not improved as expected.

Jokinen’s last game as head coach of HIFK was the home match against Lukko on Tuesday. HIFK suffered a 2–3 loss after a shootout in that contest.

Laukkanen emphasizes that he takes full responsibility for the coach’s dismissal.

– This was my decision. Of course, I will discuss the matter with the sports management team, and a report will be made to the board about these issues, but the decision was mine. I have been given the mandate for this, Laukkanen emphasizes.

HIFK has hired Tommi Miettinen, who previously coached KalPa and TPS in the league, as Jokinen’s replacement.

Miettinen’s coaching staff was completed on Thursday with two names. Ville Viitaluoma joins from the head coach position of HIFK’s U20 team to the coaching staff of the senior team, and Jan Lundell, who served as the club’s goaltending coach, will now act as the goaltending coach and team manager.
