Giant-paid flop guard: test contract with a new NHL team
Washington Capitals reports on X that goalie Cal Petersen is joining the team’s training camp on a tryout contract.
Petersen, 31, has played 106 games in the NHL, most of which were with the Los Angeles Kings. He served as the team’s starting goalie during the 2020-21 season and subsequently signed a three-year, $15 million contract with the team, which guaranteed him an annual salary of $5 million.
In the 2021-22 season, Petersen played 37 games in the NHL, but since then, his NHL responsibilities have been very limited. Petersen’s last NHL games were in the 2023-24 season, when he played five games with the Philadelphia Flyers.
The last two seasons have been entirely spent in the AHL for Petersen. Last season, he played 33 games with the Iowa Wild, posting a save percentage of 89.6.
