An incredible match was seen in the league on Wednesday, as Kärpät defeated Kiekko-Espoo in their home arena after overtime with a score of 8-7.

The emotions also ran high during the match. When Kiekko-Espoo equalized as the last minute of regular time approached, the players and coaching staff of Kärpät strongly protested to the referees about a situation preceding the goal, where Kiekko-Espoo’s Jani Lajunen knocked down Kärpät’s Rasmus Rissanen. The referees did not react to the situation.

Kärpät’s head coach Petri Karjalainen was asked for his opinion on the referees’ decision in the post-match press conference, but he remained silent.

– Well… I have understood that some league team has already been fined here for saying something wrong. I guess some parties are involved in these, Karjalainen said.

Kärpät received a penalty in overtime, which they managed to overcome. Moments later, Jiri Tichacek scored the winning goal for Kärpät.

– It was also extremely interesting to see what the penalty was for. A beautifully executed penalty kill and a beautifully scored overtime goal, Karjalainen noted.

Kärpät led the game at one point by as much as 6-2, but Kiekko-Espoo managed to come back to tie the game. The head coach of the Espoo team, Jyrki Aho, described the match in colorful terms.

– Anything is always possible. A person has even gone to the moon, so I guess any team can win a hockey game sometimes, Aho noted.
