Former HIFK star returns to Europe from the NHL – sidelined right at the start of the season
Swedish forward Emil Bemström, 26, is moving from the NHL to Switzerland. The NL team SC Bern has signed a one-year contract with Bemström.
Bemström played 14 NHL games with the Pittsburgh Penguins last season, recording 0+1 points. The majority of the season was spent in the AHL with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, where he achieved 23+25=48 points in 48 games.
During the previous six seasons in the NHL, Bemström played 242 regular season games (34+41=75) and five playoff games. In addition to the Penguins, he represented the Columbus Blue Jackets, who also drafted the forward in the 4th round (#117) in 2017.
In the 2020-21 season, Bemström was also seen in the Liiga with HIFK, where he played 16 games, achieving strong stats of 8+9=17.
Bemström will have to start the new season later than others, as he is currently recovering from an injury. He is expected to return to action in early October. The NL season starts on September 9.
