Ottawa Senators’ Finnish defenseman Nikolas Matinpalo‘s game was cut short during last night’s NHL round.

Matinpalo, 28, was the target of a brutal check in the first period of the game against the New Jersey Devils. Devils forward Anthony Mantha checked the Finn from behind into the boards, causing Matinpalo to lose his balance and crash into the boards.

Matinpalo remained on the ice after the incident and was unable to return to the game. Mantha received a five-minute penalty for boarding for his hit.

Ottawa later confirmed that Matinpalo suffered an upper body injury that prevented him from continuing to play. The Finnish defenseman’s ice time ended up being just two minutes and 19 seconds.

It is currently unknown how seriously Matinpalo was injured or if he will be sidelined for upcoming games.

Ottawa’s defense has also been challenged by other injuries. Jake Sanderson and Artem Zub have also been absent from the lineup.

Matinpalo has appeared in all six of Ottawa’s games this season, but he has yet to open his scoring account.

The Senators secured a 4–1 victory against the Devils in the game.
