Cold shower for the Lions despite NHL stars – Switzerland took the EHT thriller
The Lions received strong NHL reinforcements for their lineup in the Sweden EHT tournament, but it wasn’t enough to secure a victory against Switzerland. Switzerland claimed a 5–4 win after a shootout.
Switzerland came into the match with speed, as Lukas Frick put his team ahead in just the second minute of the first period. Theo Rochette later extended the lead to 2–0 before the Lions truly woke up in the game.
Finland equalized in just under five minutes when Jesse Puljujärvi and Vili Saarijärvi managed to score in the second period.
Switzerland regained control just before the second intermission when Rochette scored his second goal of the evening while shorthanded.
In the final period, the Lions fought back again, and the match went into overtime after Saku Mäenalanen and Puljujärvi found the net.
In the shootout, only the NHL superstar Aleksander Barkov succeeded for the Finns, who went without points during regular time. The goals that secured Switzerland’s victory were credited to Rochette and Tyler Moy.
One of the brightest Finnish names in the match, alongside Puljujärvi who scored two goals, was Anton Lundell. The Florida Panthers star forward assisted on three of the Lions’ goals.
The Lions’ tournament continues on Saturday against the Czech Republic and concludes on Sunday with a match against Sweden. The World Championships held in Switzerland will start on May 15.
