The Carolina Hurricanes have signed a one-year NHL contract with Finnish defenseman Juuso Välimäki. The total value of the contract is approximately 900,000 dollars.

The decision came as a surprise, as the Swedish club Brynäs had already announced on Wednesday that they had made a deal with the 27-year-old defenseman.

Välimäki moved to Carolina during the 2024–25 season from Utah, but he ultimately did not get the chance to play a single game with the Hurricanes’ NHL roster during that period.

In his NHL career, Välimäki has appeared in a total of 271 games and collected 72 points. However, a permanent spot in NHL lineups has so far eluded him.

The Carolina Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup championship last season. The team featured Finnish players Sebastian Aho and Jesperi Kotkaniemi.
