Carolina Hurricanes signed a Finnish defenseman
The Carolina Hurricanes have signed a one-year extension with Finnish defenseman Aleksi Heimosalmi. The 23-year-old Heimosalmi’s new contract is two-way.
In the NHL, his annual salary is $850,000, while in the AHL, his earnings are $85,000.
The Hurricanes drafted Heimosalmi in the second round of the 2021 NHL Draft. The defenseman, who left Porin Ässät for North America in the fall of 2024, has played the last two seasons in the Carolina organization.
Last season, Heimosalmi played for the AHL team Chicago Wolves, where the defenseman recorded 17 points with 4 goals and 13 assists in 52 regular season games.
Although his NHL debut is still pending, the recent extension indicates that Carolina still believes in the Finnish defenseman’s development. Heimosalmi will continue his fight for a spot in the reigning Stanley Cup champion’s NHL roster next season.
