Big surprise: NHL legend got the boot!

New York Islanders GM and Vice President Mathieu Darche announced on Sunday that Patrick Roy has been relieved of his head coaching duties after three seasons.
The new head coach is 57-year-old Peter DeBoer, who has 17 seasons of experience as a coach in the NHL. DeBoer has previously led the Dallas Stars, Vegas Golden Knights, San Jose Sharks, New Jersey Devils, and Florida Panthers.
DeBoer has also served as an assistant coach for Canada at the 2026 Olympics and at the 2025 Four Nations Face-Off tournament.
The Islanders are currently third in the Metropolitan Division, but the gap to the teams below the playoff line is only one point. However, their last four games have ended in defeat.
