The St. Louis Blues named their 25th captain in franchise history on Wednesday in the NHL.

The club’s choice fell on star forward Robert Thomas, who will soon begin his ninth season with the Blues.

What makes the 27-year-old Canadian star’s captaincy selection special is the detail that he has been closely involved in NHL trade rumors for a year.

The Blues drafted Thomas with the 20th overall pick in the first round in the summer of 2017. Last season, Thomas played 64 regular-season games, recording 25 goals and 39 assists for a total of 64 points, making him the team’s leading scorer.

Thomas’s contract, which includes an annual salary of $8.1 million, runs through the summer of 2031.
