Auston Matthews set a tough condition for Toronto – or he will leave
Auston Matthews’ future with the Toronto Maple Leafs has become the hottest topic of the summer – and at the same time a crucial factor for the future direction of the entire franchise.
Although the star forward has two seasons left on his current contract, his long-term commitment to Toronto is not certain.
– I can’t predict the future, Matthews said briefly at the season-ending press conference.
The Athletic’s reporter Chris Johnston reports that Matthews is not interested in speculation or plans per se, but is waiting for concrete actions. He wants to see clear signs of improvement in Toronto’s competitiveness before making decisions about his future. In practice, this means he will evaluate the moves made by the new GM John Chayka over the summer and their impact on the team’s level.
The situation immediately puts pressure on Chayka – along with franchise legend Mats Sundin, who serves as his advisor. They are expected to quickly demonstrate that the Maple Leafs are moving forward and not remaining in the middle or below in the standings.
According to Johnston, the summer draft and free agency will serve as a kind of gauge for Matthews regarding the direction of the franchise. Only after these events is he expected to reassess the situation and decide whether he will commit to Toronto for a longer term or not.
If Matthews ultimately decides to leave, it would be a significant setback for Toronto. His contract includes a full no-trade clause, which gives him the right to decide on a potential trade and its destination. This would significantly limit the Maple Leafs’ negotiating position, as the team would not be able to freely shop around interested teams.
Johnston believes that a potential trade involving Matthews would be substantial in nature, including young prospects, NHL-level players, and draft picks. A significant trade between the Vancouver Canucks and Minnesota Wild, in which Quinn Hughes was involved as part of a multi-player and pick package, has been cited as a comparison.
