Ilta-Sanomat reports that Florida Panthers head coach Paul Maurice has been linked to discussions regarding the coaching of the Lions for the Olympics.

In talks initiated by players, Maurice was mentioned either for the coaching staff or even as a replacement for head coach Antti Pennanen.

According to sources from IS, the two-time Stanley Cup champion coach did not outright dismiss the idea. However, the Finnish Ice Hockey Association did not pursue the matter further.

The Lions’ GM Jere Lehtinen says he has heard about the discussions but emphasizes that nothing concrete has happened.

– In a way, yes, but there has been no concrete action, Lehtinen said in Milan.

Lehtinen also states that he has not been in contact with Maurice.

– No, no. That’s the thing, there hasn’t been anything concrete.

Maurice has been coaching the Panthers for the fourth season. The team has been referred to as the “Finnish team” because it includes players Aleksander Barkov, Anton Lundell, Eetu Luostarinen, and Niko Mikkola.

Also working in the Panthers’ coaching staff is Tuomo Ruutu, who serves as an assistant coach for the Lions’ Olympic team.

The Finnish Ice Hockey Association announced before the Olympics that Pennanen will continue as head coach at least until spring 2027.
