Washington Capitals captain Aleksandr Ovechkin, 40, stated in a media conference marking the end of the season that his extensive NHL career is likely to continue next season.

– I’m pretty sure this wasn’t my last game. I hope it wasn’t my last game against Columbus, Ovechkin told the press.

The experienced Russian forward was again the Capitals’ most effective player this past season. Ovechkin scored 32 goals and collected a total of 64 points.

Ovechkin plans to hold further negotiations with GM Chris Patrick and president Brian MacLellan. He has one condition for his return.

– If I return to the NHL, the Capitals need to be capable of advancing to the playoffs and fighting for the Stanley Cup.

Ovechkin also did not hide his hopes regarding the upcoming contract.

– This is what I want to hear from Patrick: “Here’s a two-year contract. Sign it,” the Russian star said with a laugh.
