Washington Capitals’ Aleksandr Ovechkin will leave the NHL at the end of the current season. The team announced the star forward’s decision on their website on Monday.

The 41-year-old Ovechkin is playing his 22nd season in the NHL. The league’s all-time leading scorer has scored 929 goals, including 331 on the power play and 141 game-winners. He holds the top spot in all three categories.

The decision to end his NHL career was made within the family last summer.

– My family and I decided last summer that this would be my last season in the NHL, Ovechkin stated in a press release.

The announcement came exactly 21 years after Ovechkin’s NHL debut. He wanted to announce his decision before the Capitals’ first home game to have the opportunity to thank those who have been part of his career.

– I am looking forward to this season with my teammates, and we will do everything we can to make this year special. I plan to enjoy every moment with my family, my sons, our fans, and everyone who has been part of my hockey career.
