HPK has made a 1+1 year contract with Swedish defender Hugo Gabrielson. The second year of the contract includes options for both parties, allowing Gabrielson to move to the SHL if he wishes. Otherwise, the option for the second season is available to HPK.

Gabrielson, 23, has played in the Swedish Allsvenskan in recent years. Last season, he recorded 32 points (11+21) in 48 games with Nybro Vikings IF, making him the most effective defender on his team.

Having played his entire career in his home country, Gabrielson has accumulated 82 points (21+61) in a total of 214 Allsvenskan games. In the SHL, he has played one game in his career.

Gabrielson is a 6th round draft pick of the Vancouver Canucks from 2021.

– Hugo is a very mobile defender whose strengths lie in puck possession and skating. It’s great that we reached an agreement on a contract with him, commented HPK’s player scout Jukka Voutilainen in the club’s press release.

– He was drafted into the NHL at a young age and has gone through Frölunda’s quality junior pipeline, but has only started to realize his true potential as a player in recent seasons and has developed into one of the top defenders in HockeyAllsvenskan, Voutilainen continues.
