Aatu Räty is changing scenery in the NHL. The Vancouver Canucks have traded the 23-year-old Finnish forward to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Toronto announced the trade in a statement early Friday morning Finnish time. Vancouver receives farm forwards Jacob Quillan and Brandon Buhr in return.

Räty’s situation changed quickly. He cleared waivers on Thursday without a taker, but just moments later the Maple Leafs acquired him in exchange for two players.

The Finnish center’s start to the season in Vancouver was fragmented. Räty had to watch several games from outside the lineup and managed to play in four games, scoring one goal.

Last season, he had more responsibility: in 66 regular-season games, Räty collected 4+10=14 points. The last spring’s world champion has played a total of 118 NHL games with stats of 14+15=29.

The Maple Leafs is already Räty’s third NHL organization in his career. The New York Islanders drafted him in the second round in 2021 and sent him to Vancouver in January 2023 as part of the Bo Horvat player trade. Now, the career of the forward known for his faceoff skills continues in Toronto.

Of the players traveling to Vancouver, Quillan, 24, has recorded 1+2=3 points in 24 NHL games. The same-aged Buhr has yet to make his NHL debut.
