A tough claim from Switzerland: this is how the Lions will fall in the World Championship final?
Finland and Switzerland will meet in the ice hockey World Championship final on Sunday at 21:20 Finnish time in Zurich. The Swiss Watson newspaper reports that the different recovery times after the semifinals significantly affect the match’s dynamics.
Switzerland reached the final through a semifinal against Norway, which ended on Saturday at 18:40 Finnish time. Finland, on the other hand, played a significantly later match against Canada, which extended until 23:20.
As a result, Switzerland has gained nearly a five-hour advantage in recovery before the final: the Swiss have about 26 hours and 40 minutes of rest from the end of the semifinal to the start of the final, while Finland’s corresponding time is exactly 22 hours.
Switzerland’s situation was also eased by the fact that the team resolved their semifinal already after two periods with a lead of 4–0, which allowed for a clear easing of the game towards the end. Finland, on the other hand, had to play full throttle until the end, as they entered the third period with a 4–2 lead against Canada.
The importance of rest is also highlighted by the recent history of the tournament. In eight of the last ten World Championship finals, the title has been won by the team that played their semifinal earlier. In this millennium, only Canada (2016) and Sweden (2017) have managed to win the championship after a later semifinal.
