The rookie card of San Jose Sharks’ young superstar Macklin Celebrini has fetched an astonishing amount.

The unique player card of the 20-year-old Canadian was sold at Goldin Auctions’ auction on Saturday for a whopping 1.28 million dollars, or about 1.12 million euros.

This is the highest price ever paid for a single hockey card, excluding Wayne Gretzky‘s cards. What makes Celebrini’s record card particularly valuable is that it is a true rarity: only one copy of the card has been produced.

The comparison highlights the magnitude of the amount. More was paid for the card than Celebrini’s base salary of 975,000 dollars for the upcoming season of his rookie contract.

Celebrini, who has emerged as a cornerstone for the Sharks’ future, will not have to settle for rookie contract-level earnings for long. The first overall pick of the 2024 NHL Draft signed a new five-year contract with the Sharks this summer, worth an impressive total of 94 million dollars. The massive contract will take effect in a year.

The title of the most expensive hockey card of all time still belongs to Wayne Gretzky. His O-Pee-Chee rookie card was sold for an astounding 3.75 million dollars in 2021.
