A rare crushing victory occurred in the World Championships – the last time this happened was 87 years ago
Hungary last won a match at the World Cup finals by at least a five-goal margin in 1939.
At that time, Hungary defeated Belgium 8–1 in the World Cup held in Switzerland.
It has been 87 years since that crushing victory, and now Hungary has achieved its next win by at least five goals in the World Cup main event.
The Hungarians dominated Great Britain in Tuesday night’s game in Zurich with a score of 5–0. At the same time, Hungary firmly secured a spot in next year’s tournament.
The result was a disaster for Britain, as Hungary was expected to be the main opponent in the tournament. Points from head-to-head matches determine ties, so now the Brits’ better chance might be to surprise Germany or Latvia and hope that they do not collect any more points. Germany is at zero, Latvia has three points.
Slovenia back on the scoreboard
In the second game of the evening, Slovenia fought for a point against Slovakia. Slovakia ultimately won the game 5–4 in a penalty shootout, but Slovenia equalized in regular time in the last minute, so the team can be satisfied with the point.
At the same time, Slovenia has already reached three points, having previously defeated the Czech Republic 3–2. Slovenia is currently more likely to survive than Jukka Jalonen‘s Italy, which has no points. The countries will face each other again.
Slovakia might be disappointed about losing a point, but the team has still won all three of its games.
