A huge trade was made in the NHL! Olli Määttä is changing scenery.
Utah Mammoth and Calgary Flames have made a blockbuster trade in the NHL.
Star defenseman Mackenzie Weegar, 32, is moving to Utah. In exchange, Calgary receives defenseman Olli Määttä, forward Jonathan Castagna, and three 2nd round draft picks for the summer of 2026. The draft picks come from Utah, New York Rangers, and Ottawa Senators.
The price Utah is paying is steep considering that Weegar is currently having his worst season in years. In 60 games, the Canadian defenseman has recorded 3+18=21 points and his plus-minus rating is -35. He has the potential for much better. In his best season, 2023-24, Weegar scored 20+32=52 points in 82 games.
Weegar’s annual salary is $6.25 million. His contract is valid until the summer of 2031.
Määttä has been in a limited role this season in Utah. The Finnish defenseman has played 22 games with stats of 0+1. His annual salary is $3.5 million. Määttä’s contract expires in the summer of 2028.
Castagna is a 20-year-old center prospect, drafted by the Arizona Coyotes in the 3rd round in 2023. This season, he has been playing for Cornell University’s team in the NCAA. In 29 games, he has scored 14+18=32 points.
