A hefty pot of money for league clubs – NHL deal revealed
The Washington Capitals have signed a three-year entry-level contract with Finnish prospect Oliver Suvanto.
The 17-year-old forward was selected in the first round, 18th overall, at the NHL draft in June. The entry-level contract was finalized just over a month after the draft.
According to the Capitals’ plan, Suvanto will play one more season on loan at Tappara before moving to North America. If he plays in the NHL, his annual salary will be $1.075 million, which is approximately €940,000 at the current exchange rate.
Last season, Suvanto played 48 regular-season games for Tappara in the Liiga, recording 2+9 points. He appeared in one game during the championship-winning playoffs.
With the entry-level contract, a $315,000 NHL development compensation will be shared among Suvanto’s youth clubs. Half of the compensation will go to Tappara and the other half to TPS. At the current exchange rate, Tappara’s share is just under €137,800.
