A harsh fate for the Finnish duo worth 10 million dollars in the NHL – out of the lineup
Even a player contract worth millions does not guarantee a spot in the NHL. This was experienced immediately on the opening night of the new season by the highly paid Finnish duo Teuvo Teräväinen and Jesperi Kotkaniemi.
Chicago Blackhawks’ Teräväinen and Carolina Hurricanes’ Kotkaniemi were left out of the active rosters during the opening night of the new NHL season on Wednesday night.
The combined annual average of the duo’s contracts is as much as 10.22 million dollars.
Teräväinen watched from the sidelines as Chicago played away against the Vegas Golden Knights. Instead of the Finn, the spots went to others, mainly the team’s young future forwards.
Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill revealed that he made the final decision on Monday night. According to him, there are more NHL-level players in the team than spots in the lineup.
However, Blashill promised that Teräväinen would get to play during the season-opening road trip.
For the 32-year-old Finn, the situation in Chicago is challenging. Teräväinen is in the last year of his three-year contract. The skilled player’s annual salary is 5.4 million dollars.
For Kotkaniemi, being sent to the stands was an unfortunate continuation from last spring. At that time, the forward, who watched all the playoffs from the sidelines, remained a spectator as Carolina marched all the way to win the Stanley Cup.
The 26-year-old Kotkaniemi’s contract costs the Hurricanes 4.82 million dollars against the salary cap per season. The contract of the player from Pori extends until the summer of 2030.
Both Finnish players sent to the stands saw their team open the season with a loss, which may contribute to their return to the active lineup in the near future.
Chicago lost to Vegas in an away game 2–5. Carolina, on the other hand, fell to Florida in overtime with a score of 0–1.
