Aleksandr Ovetshkin has been a statistical anomaly in the NHL this season. And it’s not about the Russian star’s goal count or incredible shot. It’s about Ovetshkin’s deployment.
Ovetshkin has not started a single shift from his own defensive zone. He is the only player in the entire NHL to do so.
58 percent of Ovetshkin’s shifts have occurred while the game is in progress. 29 percent have started from the offensive zone and 13 percent from the neutral zone.
Less than two percent of his shifts from his own zone have also been started by Carolina Hurricanes’ Shayne Gostisbehere, Ottawa Senators’ Olle Lycksell, and Pittsburgh Penguins’ Anthony Mantha.
In the offensive zone, Ovetshkin’s game has thrived. He has recorded 12 points with 4 goals and 8 assists in 16 games.
