New York Islanders announces that they have signed a three-year entry-level contract with Matthew Schaefer.

17-year-old Schaefer is the NHL’s first overall pick this summer, having played last season with the Erie Otters in the OHL. The Canadian defenseman played only 17 games due to injury, recording 7+15=22 points.

Schaefer’s entry-level contract includes a standard base salary of $877,500, a signing bonus of $97,500, and performance bonuses of $3.5 million. He can earn a maximum of $4.475 million next season.
