The Florida Panthers’ attempt to acquire NHL star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck was close to leading to Finnish forward Anton Lundell being traded last summer.

Urheilucast host Esko Seppänen reports that Lundell was part of the Panthers’ best and final trade offer that the team made to the Winnipeg Jets for Hellebuyck.

The situation progressed to the point where Panthers GM Bill Zito decided to personally inform Lundell that he was included in the trade package.

Zito did not want the Finn to hear about his potential move through social media, for example. The team executive has a good relationship with Lundell’s agent and wanted to handle the situation as transparently as possible.

According to Seppänen, Lundell’s trade was ultimately just millimeters away from happening.

However, a decisive obstacle came from Winnipeg. The Jets rejected Florida’s offer, so Lundell’s trade did not materialize.

The Jets ultimately accepted a trade package offered by the New Jersey Devils in October, which is clearly weaker than Florida’s offer.
