The possible return of Russia to the ice hockey World Championships has led the Russian media to launch a fierce attack against Finland and other countries opposing Russia’s participation.

The Russian site Championat published an article on Wednesday, in which European countries are referred to as a “pack of little thieves” in the title. The text criticizes the Russia boycott initiated by Finland in strong terms.

– This whole farce started with our geographical neighbors, the Finns, who immediately began to gather a European anti-Russian coalition around them and actively incite others to boycott matches, the article states.

– In a civilized society, such actions are called incitement.

The article also quotes Russian coach Andrei Nazarov, who compares countries refusing to play against Russia to Somali pirates.

– This whole pack of Norwegians, Swedes, Finns, Czechs, Germans, and Latvians are little thieves trying to become part of the big game. But we or our national team cannot be intimidated, as we know that the strongest always wins, Nazarov asserts.

Championat also questions the security concerns raised by European countries and insinuates derogatorily about their mental health issues.

– We have certainly already suspected that they have mental health problems, but what security are we really talking about here? the site writes.

The latest ice hockey world championships of Finland and the Czech Republic are also targeted for criticism. Finland won the World Championship gold in 2026 and the Czech Republic in 2024. Championat claims the value of these championships is minimal because Russia has not participated in the tournaments.

– Without the Russian national team, it is clearly easier to win and call oneself a world champion. However, the value of such championships is not even worth a penny, the article states.
