Former HIFK goalkeeper Niko Hovinen criticizes the actions of the club’s then head coach Olli Jokinen last season. The 38-year-old goalkeeper states in the Mertaranta & Saariluoma podcast that he did not speak with Jokinen face to face even once.

Hovinen describes last season as the hardest of his career. He played 14 games for HIFK before he was temporarily sidelined.

In January, events took an unfortunate turn when Hovinen’s equipment was carried out of the locker room a couple of days after a crushing defeat.

– I was outsourced from the team’s activities without a word.

Hovinen admits that his performance did not justify a greater responsibility. However, the club’s way of handling the situation left him disappointed.

– I wouldn’t have deserved more playing time anyway. But the way it was handled, just sulking and pushing me aside without discussing the matter….

According to Hovinen, the relationship with Jokinen remained unresolved even after the season ended.

– We never spoke face to face (with Jokinen). I was eagerly waiting for the end-of-season meetings (exit meetings), but I didn’t even get an invitation to that. I never heard anything from there, Hovinen reveals.

Hovinen was able to return briefly to HIFK’s roster during the season, but an injury cut his comeback short.

Currently, Hovinen is without a contract. He spent part of the early season with Tappara.
