The sensation is ready – this country rises to the ice hockey World Championships after a 20-year break!
Ukraine will rise to the main division of the ice hockey World Championships in spring 2027 after a 20-year break. In addition to Ukraine, Kazakhstan will also be seen in the World Championships next year.
Kazakhstan won the 1A division World Championships with 13 points, and Ukraine placed second with ten points. Behind them were France, who collected eight points, and Poland. Also competing were Lithuania, who earned four points, and Japan, who ended with two points and will drop to the 1B division next year.
Ukraine’s rise was no longer in their own hands on the final day of the tournament on Friday. Poland would have moved ahead of Ukraine if they had won against Lithuania in regular time. However, this did not happen, as Lithuania surprised Poland by winning in overtime with a score of 2-1.
Ukraine was last seen in the World Championships in 2007, so next year the country will return to the main division level after a long break. Kazakhstan, on the other hand, dropped from the main division last year, so it returns to the World Championships immediately after a one-year hiatus.
The scoring leader of the 1A division World Championship tournament was Ukraine’s forward Daniil Trakht, who recorded 4+4 points in five games. He is a familiar name in Finnish hockey, as he played this season in Liiga for Lukko and in Mestis for TUTO. Trakht also has a contract with Lukko for next season.
