The Pelicans are hiring an interesting name for their defense, one that is already familiar to Liiga fans from Sweden.

According to the Swedish newspaper Expressen, the transfer of defender Carl-Johan Lerby to the Pelicans is practically complete.

– Expressen has previously revealed that several factors indicate Lerby’s transfer to Finland, where the Pelicans have long been at the forefront of acquiring a defender. Now Expressen can reveal that Lerby has decided to play for the Pelicans next season, the paper writes.

A significant role in the transfer is played by the Pelicans’ new sports director Jarkko Oikkarinen, who worked last season as the assistant sports director at Lerby’s former club in Kalmar.

The 29-year-old Swedish defender had a strong season in HockeyAllsvenskan. He recorded 33 regular season games with Kalmar, achieving 6+14=20 points, and continued his impressive pace in the playoffs with 2+5=7 points in seven games.

Liiga is a familiar league for Lerby. He played for Vaasan Sport in the 2023–24 season, where he accumulated 20 regular season games with 1+3=4 points.
