Shocking news in the NHL – superstar has requested a trade!
Winnipeg Jets’ star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck has submitted a trade request to his current team in the NHL. Hellebuyck’s agent Ray Petkau announced this in a statement released on Thursday.
The trade request is not new, although this is the first time the goaltender’s desire to leave has become public.
Hellebuyck states that he informed the Jets several months ago of his wish to change teams. The goaltender wanted to handle the trade behind the scenes, but the Jets’ management’s hesitation on the matter ultimately changed his mind.
The 33-year-old Hellebuyck has represented Winnipeg throughout his entire NHL career. The American star made his debut in the NHL back in 2015 and has risen over the years to become one of the Jets’ key players and one of the best goaltenders in the NHL.
Hellebuyck has been awarded the Vezina Trophy, given to the NHL’s best goaltender, three times.
The American goaltender’s trophy cabinet was further filled earlier this year when he helped secure Olympic gold for his country at the Winter Games in Milan.
Hellebuyck’s potential trade is also a significant decision for the Jets financially. His current contract runs until the summer of 2031 and has an average annual salary of a whopping 8.5 million dollars.
Transferring such a lucrative contract at this stage of the offseason makes the trade challenging, but Hellebuyck’s public trade request now adds pressure on the Jets’ management.
