The Carolina Hurricanes have emerged as the most likely new team for Winnipeg Jets’ star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck. According to Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman, a solution for the trade may involve a deal between three NHL teams .

In the trade, the Hurricanes would send defenseman Alexander Nikishin, whose main suitor is the St. Louis Blues. The Blues would likely be the third party in the arrangement.

– At the moment, Carolina is the most motivated suitor. If Nikishin wanted to make a deal with Winnipeg, Hellebuyck would already be in Carolina. Some teams are now allowed to talk to Nikishin. He just switched agents, and there is speculation that the Hurricanes want to explore the possibility of a three-team trade, Friedman writes.

Hellebuyck’s first wish was the Florida Panthers, but their offer did not excite the Jets. According to Friedman, the package included Evan Rodrigues, another player – possibly Eetu Luostarinen – and a draft pick package that Florida sent to Ottawa for Brady Tkachuk.

The goaltender has since accepted additional teams as potential targets where he believes he can win. Buffalo was, according to Friedman, the closest to a trade. Anaheim and Utah have also reportedly looked into the situation.

Hellebuyck announced his trade request at the end of August and did not report to the Jets’ training camp. Winnipeg shelved him nearly two weeks ago. With the season starting, he will also lose salary earnings.

Winnipeg’s goaltending acquisition on Monday may facilitate the construction of the trade. The Jets picked up Clay Stevenson from the Washington Capitals off waivers, and according to Friedman, they may no longer require a goaltender in exchange for Hellebuyck.
