The Vancouver Canucks placed Aatu Räty on the NHL’s waiver list on Wednesday. It has now been revealed that the team initially tried to find a new team for the Finn through a trade.

According to Postmedia reporter Patrick Johnston, Canucks GM Ryan Johnson attempted to trade Räty, but no buyer was found. Other NHL teams can claim him from the waiver list without any compensation.

– It was a tough decision to make. He is a great young man. If he had only been able to play here sporadically, I feel I owe him a new opportunity, Johnson told Postmedia.

Räty, 23, has played in only four of Vancouver’s eight games this season. In his place, centers such as Paul Cotter, Drew O’Connor, and Max Sasson have stepped up.

In faceoffs, Räty has been strong. He has won 56.8 percent of them this season and 59.1 percent throughout his NHL career.
